The Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship 2026 offers a fully funded opportunity for international students to pursue undergraduate, master’s, or doctoral degrees in Japan. Administered by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), this scholarship covers tuition fees, provides a monthly stipend, and includes travel expenses.

What Is the MEXT Scholarship?

The MEXT Scholarship is a prestigious program aimed at fostering international exchange and mutual understanding. It supports foreign students who wish to study at Japanese universities, covering various academic levels and fields of study.

Types of MEXT Scholarships

MEXT offers several scholarship categories:

Eligibility Criteria

Eligibility requirements vary by scholarship type, but general criteria include:

  • Nationality: Applicants must be citizens of countries that have diplomatic relations with Japan.
  • Age: For undergraduate applicants, born on or after April 2, 2001; for master’s and Ph.D. applicants, typically under 35 years old.
  • Academic Background:
    • Undergraduate: Completion of 12 years of education or equivalent.
    • Master’s: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
    • Ph.D.: Master’s degree or equivalent.
  • Language Proficiency: Willingness to learn Japanese; proficiency may be required depending on the program.
  • Health: Applicants must be physically and mentally fit to study in Japan.

Application Timeline

The application process generally follows this timeline:

  • April 2025: The application period opens.
  • May–June 2025: Submission of applications to Japanese embassies or consulates.
  • June–July 2025: Written exams and interviews conducted.
  • August–September 2025: Preliminary results announced.
  • January–February 2026: Final selection results released.
  • April or September/October 2026: Departure for Japan and commencement of studies.

Application Process

There are two primary application routes:

1. Embassy Recommendation

  • Step 1: Obtain application forms from the Japanese embassy or consulate in your country.
  • Step 2: Prepare the required documents, including academic transcripts, certificates, recommendation letters, and a medical certificate.
  • Step 3: Submit the application by the specified deadline.
  • Step 4: Participate in written exams and interviews if shortlisted.
  • Step 5: Await final selection and placement results.

2. University Recommendation

  • Step 1: Apply directly to a Japanese university that offers the MEXT scholarship.
  • Step 2: If the university selects you, it will recommend you to MEXT.
  • Step 3: MEXT makes the final decision and notifies successful candidates.

Note: The University Recommendation route is typically for research students.

Required Documents

Applicants must submit the following:

  • Completed application form.
  • Academic transcripts and certificates.
  • Recommendation letters.
  • Medical certificate.
  • Research plan or study plan (for graduate applicants).
  • Proof of language proficiency (if applicable).
