With China as the dominant trade partner and the United States as the principal security ally for both the Philippines and Taiwan, the Fellows will examine the impact of these complex relationships. The program will delve into how the Marcos administration in the Philippines is strengthening security ties with the US, Japan, and Australia, and how Taiwan’s leadership navigates its path amidst Chinese pressures and US support.
Participants in the Jefferson Fellowships 2024 will gain invaluable insights through a three-week dialogue, study, and travel program. Starting at the East-West Center in Honolulu, Fellows will engage in roundtable discussions with peers, US officials, and regional analysts to understand the US perspective on security, regional order, and the implications of the November elections. Following this, the Fellows will travel to the Philippines and Taiwan to gather first-hand perspectives from government leaders, business experts, academic specialists, and local journalists.
